Overview Of Bihar Bijli Scheme
Let’s first talk about the data. They have claimed that 90% of Bihar’s electricity consumers, meaning those who have an electricity connection, will not have to pay anything. This means their monthly consumption is less than 125 units. In other words, 90% of consumers have a monthly consumption of less than 125 units. So, for these 90% of people, there will be no electricity bill to pay it will be zero. Okay?
They have stated that there are approximately 1 crore 86 lakh 60,000 electricity consumers across Bihar, whether they are under the North Bihar Power Distribution Company or the South Bihar Power Distribution Company.Out of these, based on the 90% figure, they have stated that 1 crore 67 lakh 94,000 consumers will no longer have to pay electricity bills because their consumption falls below 125 units. This is a very significant scheme and it will involve a lot of expenditure. The cabinet approval has also specified the amount that will be spent on this. So this can be considered a major scheme.
However it should have been introduced in Bihar much earlier. It’s being launched during the election period, but it should have been brought in much earlier because there are many poor families who are unable to pay their electricity bills on time. So, they will get some relief or discount through this scheme.
How the Benefit Works
Now, let’s talk about how you will benefit from this.
Suppose your monthly consumption is less than 125 units. When the person comes to read your electricity meter and generates your bill, they give you a slip.
You need to check that slip to see how much your monthly consumption is. For example, if you use a lot of appliances like AC, cooler, or fans, your consumption might go up to 150, 200, 250, 500, or even 600 units. Do you understand?
If your monthly consumption is below 125 units, you won’t have to pay anything it will be free.
But as soon as it exceeds 125 units, you will have to pay the applicable charges for the extra units. For instance, if someone’s consumption is exactly 125 units, they won’t have to pay anything.
Even if it’s 100 units, they won’t have to pay. Do you understand? But if your consumption goes above 125 units, say 150 units, then 125 units will be waived, and you won’t be charged for those.
However, for the extra 25 units consumed, you will have to pay the applicable charges.
Eligibility for the Scheme

- Only domestic connections, whether in rural or urban areas, will be eligible for this benefit.
- If you have a commercial connection, you won’t get this benefit, and you will have to pay the applicable charges.
- But if you have a domestic connection, you will directly receive this benefit.
Implementation Date

This means that for the electricity bill generated in July, 125 units will be deducted before calculating the charges.
